On October 11,1138,in Aleppo,Syria,The figure of 230,000 dead is based on a historical conflation of this earthquake with earthquakes in November 1137 on the Jazira plain and the large seismic event of September 30, 1139 in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja. The first mention of a 230,000 death toll was by Ibn Taghribirdi in the fifteenth century. On December 26, 2004,Indian Ocean,Sumatra, Indonesia,Deaths from earthquake and resulting tsunami. On December 16, 1920,Ningxia–Gansu,China Major fractures, landslides. On November 1,1755 Lisbon,Portugal Includes several thousands of deaths in Morocco and Spain,so the landscape is covered with dead bodies. On December 28,1908 Messina, Italy,on December 28, 1908 from about 5:20 to 5:21 am an earthquake of 7.1 on the moment magnitude scale occurred centered on Messina, a city in Sicily. Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland also suffered heavy damage. The ground shook for some 30 to 40 seconds, and the destruction was felt within a 300 km radius. Moments after the earthquake, a 40 feet (12 m) tsunami struck nearby coasts causing even more devastation. 93% of structures in Messina were destroyed and some 70,000 residents were killed. Rescuers searched through the rubble for weeks, and whole families were still being pulled out alive days later, but thousands remained buried there. Buildings in the area had not been constructed for earthquake resistance, having heavy roofs and vulnerable foundations.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake that hit China's Sichuan province, leveling buildings and taking tens of thousands of lives, might not have wrought such destruction in the United States, experts say.

Ground-shaking from the relatively shallow earthquake in China leveled entire villages, burying thousands of people beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings, including 4 million homes reportedly shattered. The death toll exceeds 15,000 and could rise to 50,000.

Due to its intensity and relatively shallow origin — just 11.8 miles (19 km) below the surface — the China earthquake generated extremely powerful shaking felt as far away as Taiwan. Earthquake engineers speculate the adobe and masonry buildings and homes, many of which were probably not reinforced with steel as building codes dictate, added to the earthquake damage, especially in more rural areas.

A final analysis of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami is likely to create a death toll in 2004 greater than any caused by ground shaking in more than four centuries.

While the total deaths from the Dec. 26, 2004 disaster remains uncertain, it stands at 275,950, according to a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) statement released Thursday. A comparatively small number of other earthquake-related fatalities for the year brings the total to 276,856, the agency reported.

However, other disaster officials put the known deaths at between 162,000 and 178,000, with a list of missing between 26,000 to 142,000. Those figures add up to a possible death toll range of between 188,000 and 320,000.

The Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake was put at magnitude 9.0 initially. One group of scientists said earlier this week it was actually 9.3. As of Thursday, however, the USGS was still using the 9.0 figure. Depending on what number geologists ultimately settle on, it will go down in history as the second or third strongest event ever measured.

The all-time largest, magnitude 9.5, hit Chile in 1960.

In 2004, just three days before the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, another large earthquake -- magnitude 8.1 -- struck north of Macquarie Island, about a thousand miles southwest of New Zealand. There were no reported deaths.

The largest U.S. earthquake in 2004 was a magnitude 6.8 in southeastern Alaska.

A magnitude 6.0 temblor struck Parkfield, Calif., on Sept. 28, 2004. Long anticipated by geologists, it ruptured roughly the same segment of the San Andreas Fault that had cracked in 1966, 1934, 1922, 1901, 1881 and 1857.

The Asian Tsunami
The deadliest U.S. earthquake in history struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906. The magnitude 7.8 quake killed about 3,000 people, but many of the deaths were attributed to fires that ravaged the city.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.[4][5]
By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded.[6] An estimated three million people were affected by the quake;[7] the Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died,[8] 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless.[9][10] The government of Haiti also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.[11]
The earthquake caused major damage in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other settlements in the region. Many notable landmark buildings were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail. Among those killed were Archbishop of Port-au-Prince Joseph Serge Miot,[12] and opposition leader Micha Gaillard.[13][14] The headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), located in the capital, collapsed, killing many, including the Mission's Chief, Hédi Annabi.[15][16]

This earthquake devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region.[4] The power and intensity was astonishing: it manage

September 2007 Sumatra earthquakes occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, the first earthquake occurred at 11:10:26 UTC (18:10 local time) on September 12, 2007. It caused buildings to sway in Jakarta, and some buildings were reported to have collapsed in the city of Bengkulu, Bengkulu Province.
Eyewitness: Edi Santoni, 38, told the Reuters news agency.

" I rushed out of my house," he said. "I don't know if there's any damage because it's dark."

"Everyone is running out of their houses in every direction," Wati Said told the Associated Press by mobile phone from Bengkulu.

"We think our neighbourhood is high enough. God willing, if the water comes, it will not touch us here. We are all afraid.

2.The 2010 Chile earthquake occurred off the coast of central Chile on Saturday, 27 February 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), having a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes.[5][1][2][6] It ranks as the sixth largest earthquake ever to be recorded by a seismograph. It was felt strongly in six Chilean regions (from Valparaíso in the north to Araucanía in the south), that together make up about 80 percent of the country's population. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the cities experiencing the strongest shaking—VIII (Destructive) on the Mercalli intensity scale (MM)—were Arauco and Coronel.

5.The southern coast of Honshū runs parallel to the Nankai Trough, which marks the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Movement on this convergent plate boundary leads to many earthquakes, some of them of megathrust type. The Nankai megathrust has five distinct segments (A-E) that can rupture independently,[5][6] the segments have ruptured either singly or together repeatedly over the last 1,300 years.[7] Megathrust earthquakes on this structure tend to occur in pairs, with a relatively short time gap between them. In addition to the two events in 1854, there were similar earthquakes in 1944 and 1946. In each case, the northeastern segment ruptured before the southwestern segment.[8] In the 1498 event, the earthquake is thought to have ruptured segments C, D and E and possibly A and B. If both parts of the megathrust ruptured, the events were either simultaneous, or close enough in time, to not be distinguished by historical sources.[6]

-May 22,1960- Valdivia,Chile -1960 Valdivia earthquake with a magnitude of 9.5---- To date this earthquake was the most powerful hurricane ever recorded. The natural disasters that happened because of the earthquake were- landslides, tsunami, a flood, and it also included the eruption of a volcano.

-December 26, 2004- Indian Ocean, Sumatra, Indonesia 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1–9.3---- This hurricane was known as an undersea megathrust earthquake. The earthquake and it's after effects killed over 230,000 people. The earthquake and it's after effects hit over 4 countries, creating more earthquakes or tsunamis.

-October 13, 1963- Kuril Islands, Russia (USSR)- 1963 Kuril Islands earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5[11]----There was no deaths, injuries, or damage recorded for this earthquake or any of it's after effects. The tsunami triggered by the earthquake caused a 4.5 wave locally.

-November 11, 1922- Atacama Region, Chile- 1922 Vallenar earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5[10]----This particular earthquake triggered a tsunami that caused a lot of damage to the coast of Chile and was observed in countries as far away as Australia. The earthquake killed several hundred people, the total was not recorded.

-August 15, 1950- Assam, India – Tibet, China- 1950 Assam - Tibet earthquake with a magnitude of 8.6----The earthquake was also destructive in Tibet and Assam, leaving 1,526 people dead. It was the sixth largest earthquake in the 20 century. It was also the largest known earthquake to not have been caused by a oceanic subduction, it was caused by two continental plates converging.
