The Wilderness Trail in 1775. This trail went from what is now Kingsport , Tennessee, through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains that went into Kentucky. It would become the route for thousands of settlers of the western frontier.

The Ohio River took pioneers to the Mississippi River. From there, they could travel to St. Louis and beyond. Traveling on the Ohio and Mississippi river, pioneers were able to start settling much more of the West.
